Cabernet Cortis

Freiburg, 1982 · FR 437-82 r · VIVC 20005

Red varietyPIWICabernet Sauvignon × Solaris

A new line from Freiburg

Resilience written
into a noble lineage.

Cabernet Cortis was bred in 1982 by Norbert Becker at the State Viticultural Institute in Freiburg. It brings Cabernet Sauvignon together with Solaris, creating a red PIWI variety suited to cooler winegrowing regions.

Its purpose extends beyond resilience. Deep colour, abundant extract and tannin, and a profile of blackcurrant and pepper can produce wines of real depth and ageing potential.

Anatomy of the variety

Dark berries.
Natural concentration.

Cabernet Cortis forms cylindrical-conical bunches that are often slightly winged. Small, round berries carry blue-black skins with a natural matt bloom; bunch density can vary with site and yield.

Slightly winged bunch A lateral shoulder gives the cluster its characteristic irregular silhouette.
Dark skin Natural pigmentation supports deep colour and an assured tannic structure.
PIWI resilience The variety was selected to reduce pressure from the principal fungal diseases of the vine.

In the vineyard

Early maturity.
Strong, upright growth.

01earlyripening

Full maturity is reached around one week before Pinot Noir.

02strongvigour

Energetic upright growth rewards attentive canopy and fruit-zone management.

03smallround berries

Fine fruit supports concentration of colour, extract and tannin.

04PIWInatural resilience

Good field resistance can help reduce the number of protective treatments required.

Aromatic spectrum

Blackcurrant.
Freshly ground pepper.

At full ripeness, Cabernet Cortis develops a dark, intense profile: blackcurrant preserve, elderberry and black cherry meet a herbal line and freshly ground pepper.
